The City of Launceston Pipes and Drums was formed in Launceston Tasmania in 1999 as part of the Launceston RSL Sub Branch. The band is made up of Pipers and Drummers from over northern Tasmania.
The band adopted the MacPherson tartan from the original uniforms purchased from the Victoria Police Pipe Band along with our original drums. Our first Pipe Major was P/M Ron Grant and our first Drum Major was D/M Tony Rushton. The band is now under the expert musical stewardship of Pipe Major Craig Cooper (ex-Australian Army Piper) and Pipe Sergeant John Fardon.
The band performs around the state and on the mainland at various festivals, charity organisations, street parades and university graduations. The band also performs at many agricultural shows throughout the north of the state. The band can also provide a mini band or a solo Piper for engagements ranging from birthdays, weddings, funerals or any event that only the Bagpipes can add that something special.
As part of the Launceston RSL, we are also proud to provide support to the RSL on ANZAC Day and memorials throughout the year.
The band is a non-profit organisation with an aim to provide an opportunity for lovers of highland music to perform for both the local community and to promote highland music. Donations are gratefully accepted to contribute to uniforms and instrument upkeep.
